Heidi Nisly, Midwifery & Doula Services
Hello. My name is Heidi Nisly and I am a Certified Professional Midwife (CPM) serving families in the Hutchinson area. The desire of my heart is to help childbearing families recognize God as the Designer of the childbirth process and to encourage expectant couples to fulfill their role in raising children for the glory of God. Furthermore, I desire to assist childbearing families in achieving a safe pregnancy and delivery.
As a young girl I had a fascination with nursing, medicine, and especially labor and birth. At the age of fourteen I began hearing more about midwives and the exciting role they play in the childbirth process. Later, I had the opportunity to meet some midwives through a medical introductory course I attended. From this point on, the Lord planted a desire in my heart to minister to childbearing families through the avenue of midwifery, and I began investigating various routes of education for my midwifery training.
My Education & Training
I was home-schooled by my parents for both my elementary and secondary education through a program called the Advanced Training Institute. I graduated in the spring of 2001. In the fall of the same year, I enrolled in the Telos Institute International, a school providing post-secondary distance learning, in order to complete various prerequisite courses. These courses included subjects such as science and healthcare, nutrition, building a medical vocabulary, and counseling. After beginning my formal training with the Medical Training Institute, I became a certified Doula in 2004. I then began their 3-year academic midwifery program.
The MTI Midwifery program is an intense course designed to prepare students for the responsibilities of midwifery. It covers subjects such as gynecology and the prenatal, labor, birth, and postpartum stages. Each student must put concentrated effort into this program because of the rigorous work load and intensive testing.
When an opening became available at Family Birth Services (FBS) in the fall of 2007, I was thrilled with the ability to receive hands on training with the apprenticeship program they offer! At FBS I had the opportunity to assist at many births both at the birth center and in homes. I also had the privilege of caring for expectant mothers as their primary midwife throughout pregnancy, labor, birth, and the postpartum period under the supervision of a licensed midwife. During my training I assisted at eighty-five births and delivered thirty-one babies as the primary midwife, giving me a total of one hundred and sixteen births. I graduated from the apprenticeship program in the spring of 2009.
I sat for and passed my NARM examination in the spring of 2010 enabling me to became a Certified Professional Midwife (CPM).
